How to choose the best timber flooring for your KL home.

Decide whether you want genuine timber

Solid hardwood and engineered wood both offer a real timber surface. Natural grain and colour variation are part of their appeal. Engineered wood uses a timber wear layer over a supporting structure; solid boards are timber through their thickness.

SPC and laminate are alternatives when the look of wood is more important to you than a genuine timber surface. Review physical samples side by side, then compare their specifications and installation requirements. Our flooring comparison explains the main differences.

Let the room shape the choice

For a bedroom, you may prioritise a calm colour and the feel of the surface. In a living room, consider how the grain, plank width and direction work with the room’s scale. A darker study floor can create a different mood from pale oak in an open family space.

Discuss moisture, sunlight and everyday spills for the actual property. Real wood needs protection from standing water. For dry kitchens or other areas with potential spills, check the selected product’s installation and use guidance; a wood-look appearance does not establish wet-area suitability.

Separate pattern from material

Herringbone and chevron describe laying patterns, not a guarantee of a particular material. Herringbone uses a staggered arrangement; chevron forms a continuous V using angled ends. Ask which material and format are available for the pattern you like.

Think about the direction from the entrance, how rooms meet and where the pattern will stop. The setting-out plan matters as much as the sample when the floor becomes a large part of the interior.

Ask five useful questions before choosing an installer

1. What exact product and specification are included in the quotation?
2. How will the existing floor and subfloor be checked?
3. Which fitting method, underlay or adhesive is proposed?
4. How will skirting, thresholds and door clearances be handled?
5. What do the product and installation terms cover, and how should the floor be maintained?

Ask to see relevant project records and discuss the work required at your own property. An attractive room photograph should help with design; it should not replace the product specification or installation scope.
